Salt on the sheers, pollen on the linings

Anywhere within a kilometre or two of open water — Cronulla, Burraneer, Lilli Pilli, Kurnell, Bundeena — airborne salt is the dominant soil on a window dressing. It does not look like dirt. It arrives as a fine crystalline film that settles evenly across a sheer, so nobody notices it accumulating; what people notice is that the sheer has gone slightly stiff, hangs a little heavier than it used to, and reads grey against the glass in afternoon light. Salt is also hygroscopic, so on humid nights it draws moisture and holds it against the fibre, which is why beachside sheers grey from the bottom hem upward.

The other half of the Shire has the opposite problem. Homes backing onto bushland at Engadine, Heathcote, Waterfall, Bonnet Bay and Illawong take a heavy seasonal pollen load along with fine bark and leaf dust off the eucalypts. That material is dry and light, so it drifts through an open window and settles on the top return of a pelmet and down inside the pleats where a vacuum head cannot reach. Householders who describe the hay fever as worse indoors than out are usually right, and the curtain is one of the reservoirs holding it.

Then there is the sun. West-facing family rooms across Sutherland, Miranda and Jannali cop several hours of direct afternoon load through large glass, and blockout linings take the worst of it. Heat does not soil fabric, but it does age it — coatings craze, linings go brittle at the leading edge, and stitching lets go. This matters before we clean, not after, because a curtain that is already sun-degraded needs to be identified at inspection rather than discovered halfway through a steam pass.

Why on-site works well here

Access in the Shire is genuinely easy, and that changes the economics of the job. There is a driveway or off-street parking at almost every address, homes are single or two storey, and there is no lift booking, loading dock or building manager between the van and the window. Hose runs are short, equipment comes in through the front door, and we can set up in a room and be steaming within minutes of arriving. That is the reason take-down cleaning makes so little sense here — the removal, transport and rehanging would cost more than the cleaning it replaces.

The sequence on the day is the same in a Cronulla apartment as in a Yowie Bay house. We protect the floor and any sill joinery, dry-vacuum the pleats, hems and the top return where the bulk of the loose grit and pollen sits, then colour-fast test on a hidden fold before anything wet touches the visible face. Marks and odours get treated individually. Only then does the steam pass go on, front and back, top to bottom. Sheers and light drapes are dry on the rod in about an hour and lined blockouts take closer to two, and because Shire homes actually cross-ventilate we open the back of the house rather than relying on air conditioning.

Waterfront apartments have their own quirks. Full-height glass at Woolooware Bay and Sylvania Waters usually means very wide sheers on long tracks, often motorised, running past balcony doors that are in constant use. We work around motors and recessed pelmets rather than dismantling them, clean in bays so a door stays usable, and keep water well away from the drive units. Townhouse complexes at Kirrawee and Miranda tend to run Roman blinds instead of drapes, which are cleaned on the batten with the cords protected.

Hardware, and the part most people forget

Salt corrodes metal, and curtain hardware near the water shows it well before the fabric does. Runners bind, chain drives stiffen, and brackets bloom with a fine rust that transfers straight back onto a clean panel the first time it is drawn. Rods, tracks, carriers and the top of the pelmet are wiped as part of the job rather than charged as an extra, because leaving them means recontaminating what we just cleaned.

What we cannot do is repair the hardware. A track that has seized from years of salt exposure will not come good with a wipe. We will free what can be freed and tell you plainly when the answer is a new runner set or a new track, which is a curtain fitter’s work and not ours. The same applies to a bent bracket or a motor that has failed — we will not open it.

When we would tell you not to book

Sun-rotted sheers are the clearest case. A sheer that has spent a decade on a west-facing window in Sylvania or Caringbah can look fine hanging still and tear like paper under any handling. We test by taking a gentle pull at the bottom hem and the leading edge during inspection. If the fibre gives, we stop there and say so, because steam will not restore it and the panel will come off the rod in pieces. Replacement is the honest answer and we would rather say it before you pay us.

Silk and heavily viscose drapes are the second case. Both water-mark readily, and a hot-steam pass on a hanging panel is not the right process for them. Where we find them we recommend take-down and specialist dry cleaning through a fabric care house rather than attempting it on the rod. Established mould is the third. Condensation on aluminium frames in humid waterfront bedrooms at Sylvania Waters, Gymea Bay and Bundeena produces the black spotting on blockout hems that people ring us about. Early speckling responds to targeted treatment before steaming.
