Data centre cleaning services are only meaningful if the result can be measured, and the measurement everyone in the industry works to is ISO 14644. The standard classifies an environment by the concentration of airborne particles above defined sizes, running from Class 1 at the most stringent through to Class 9. Semiconductor and pharmaceutical cleanrooms sit at the tight end of that scale. A data hall does not need to, and specifying one is an expensive mistake — the target that is actually appropriate for a live white space is ISO 14644-1 Class 8, which is what our programmes are built to achieve and maintain.

Two parts of the standard matter to a facility manager. ISO 14644-1 defines the classification itself and the sampling method used to demonstrate it: a minimum number of sample locations distributed across the floor area, sampled at a defined volume, with the results averaged and compared to the class limit for each particle size. ISO 14644-2 covers the monitoring plan — how often you re-test to show the classification is being held rather than having been achieved once on the day the contractor left. A single certificate with no monitoring behind it tells an auditor very little.

In practice we run a particle count before work begins to establish a baseline, clean to the agreed scope, then re-count after the environment has been allowed to settle. Counting immediately after cleaning while disturbed particulate is still airborne produces a worse number than the room deserves and is one of the more common ways a post-clean report gets misread. The report you receive states the sample locations, the equipment used, the pre- and post-clean readings at each measured particle size, and the resulting classification.
