A lounge a few streets back from the water collects things a lounge further inland never sees: sand arriving daily for six months of the year, salt-laden air drawing the life out of leather, sunscreen and board wax on the arms, and a dog that has just been in the ocean. Sand does not sit on a sofa, it migrates through it. Grains work past the cushion seams, down the sides of the deck and into the foam, and once they are in the foam a surface vacuum will never reach them. That is why the first twenty minutes of a job here are dry work: cushions off, crevice tool through every seam and buttoning line, the deck and the frame rails cleared, and the underside of loose cushions done as well as the top. Skip that and the extraction just turns the grit into slurry and pushes it deeper.
Then there is the summer chemistry. Sunscreen and zinc transfer off shoulders and forearms onto the arms and headrests, and on a light linen or cotton blend they oxidise to a yellow-brown that behaves like an oil stain, not a dirt stain. Board wax comes off boardshorts onto the seat front. Salt water off a wetsuit or a towel leaves a tide line with a hard rim. Each of those wants a different pre-treatment, so we identify them individually rather than blanket-spraying the whole piece and hoping.
Dogs are the other constant. A dog that swims at North Curl Curl or Rowland Reserve comes home wet with sea water in a coat that already carries its own oils, gets on the couch, and the smell that follows a week later is not in the cover — it is in the foam beneath it. Cleaning the cover alone will make it look better for a fortnight and change nothing. Odour work has to be taken down to the cushion core, and we quote it that way.
Leather on this coast fails in a specific order. Constant salt in the air is hygroscopic — it holds moisture against the finish, then the sea breeze and the sun take it away again, over and over. The topcoat goes chalky first, usually across the headrest and the front edge of the seat where skin contact is heaviest, then the piping stiffens, then the finish crazes along the flex lines. People notice at the chalky stage and assume the leather is dirty. Half the time it is dry.
A clean and condition at $90 addresses that honestly: the surface soil and body oils come off with a pH-appropriate cleaner, then a conditioner goes back into the hide and the sheen returns. What it does not do is repair. Once the finish has crazed, conditioning makes it supple but the crack pattern stays visible, and a split at a seat bolster is upholstery repair work rather than cleaning. Getting water into a sofa is easy. Getting it out again in a humid coastal house is the actual skill. The older walk-up blocks along Dee Why, Collaroy and Narrabeen typically have one aspect and very little cross-flow, and a summer day at eighty per cent relative humidity will hold moisture in foam far longer than the same job would inland. So we meter the water down, extract in more passes than most people expect, and leave air movers running on the piece rather than declaring it done and driving off.
Scheduling supports that. Bookings at the northern end go early in the day so the sofa has daylight hours and household airflow working for it, and we would rather move you to a morning slot than have a damp lounge sitting overnight in a closed unit. A fabric three-seater cleaned in the morning is normally dry to the hand by mid-afternoon. If the room is shut up, west-facing and humid, say so when you book — it changes the water volume we use, not the price.
Sun kills upholstery faster than use does. A sofa that has spent years in front of unshaded north-facing glass at Newport or Bilgola has fabric that has lost its tensile strength, and hot water extraction is enough to finish it — the weave lets go around the seams and what you get back is a clean, split couch. We test an inconspicuous panel by hand. If it fails, we say so and recommend a recover or a replacement instead of taking the booking.
Two other honest limits. Foam that has been soaked repeatedly — a garage-stored suite at Warriewood, or a lounge that has taken years of wet swimmers — can be saturated and broken down internally, and no amount of surface cleaning restores structure or fully clears the odour. And set salt-water or long-standing mould marks on pale fabric may lighten considerably without clearing; the growth is dealt with, the pigment is already in the fibre.
