Hot, dry months make it worse, because dry soil travels further into a house than damp soil does.
Work grime is the other half of it. With Wetherill Park, Smithfield, Erskine Park, Arndell Park and Silverwater all inside the region, a large number of homes have someone arriving off a warehouse floor, a workshop or a construction site — oil, rubber and yard dust concentrated into the entry, the hallway and the first two metres of the lounge. Larger and multi-generational households compound it, because that same stretch of carpet is being walked on from early morning until late at night.

Urine that has soaked through backing into underlay needs the underlay treated or replaced, and where it has reached a concrete slab the odour can return on a humid day no matter what is done to the carpet above it. Scotchgard protection is from $25 and it is worth being precise about what it does. It slows a spill from soaking in, which buys you the minute it takes to fetch a cloth and blot. It does not make carpet stain-proof, it does not stop grit abrading the pile, and it wears off traffic lanes first. On a hallway in a busy household it is a sensible add-on. On a formal lounge nobody sits in, it is money you do not need to spend.
Filtration soiling is the one people most often mistake for dirt. Those dark lines along skirting boards, under doors and around the edges of a room in a newer estate house are airborne particles drawn through the carpet edge by air movement, and they are ground into the fibre tip. A clean improves them. It rarely clears them completely, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not tried it in a house with ducted air and a construction site down the road.
Worn traffic lanes are damage, not soil. Once grit has abraded the fibre and the pile has been walked flat, the carpet reflects light differently and it will still do that after cleaning. The same goes for sun-bleached bands under a stacker door, bleach spots from a spilled cleaning product, and backing that has delaminated and gone rippled. In each of those cases we would rather look at it, say so, and clean the rooms where the money will actually show.
Timing matters too. If a new build is still being finished, or the neighbouring lots on your street are at frame stage, cleaning a brand-new carpet is usually premature — wait until the trades have finished and the street has settled. One thing worth keeping: many carpet manufacturers require a record of professional cleaning to keep a warranty alive, so we provide an invoice noting the method and date whether you ask for it or not.

That pattern is filtration soiling — air being drawn through the carpet at the edges and depositing fine construction dust on the fibre tips. It is extremely common in newly built estates. Cleaning lifts a good deal of it and the room looks markedly better, but the lines rarely disappear entirely, and while the street is still under construction they will start returning. We would rather set that expectation up front than have you compare the result against a promise we did not make.
It depends on how far it went. Treatment starts from $40 per affected area. If the urine is held in the pile, an enzyme treatment followed by extraction usually resolves both the mark and the smell. If it soaked through the backing into the underlay, the underlay has to be treated or cut and replaced. If it reached the slab, odour can come back in humid weather regardless of what we do to the carpet. We check with a moisture probe and tell you which situation you are in.
Two to four hours in most houses. Heat helps, but a sealed air-conditioned house has very little air movement, which is the part that actually matters — so we ask you to run ceiling fans and keep the air conditioning going while it dries. Stay off the carpet in outdoor shoes until it is dry, because that is exactly when fresh grit sticks. If the house is empty and shut up all day, allow towards the longer end.
